About Urban Tenure

The pace of urbanization and the number of people living in urban settings has increased exponentially over the course of the past century, with more than half of the world’s population now living in urban areas. Urbanization is driven by the concentration of investment and employment opportunities in urban areas. It is estimated that half of the population Africa will live in cities by 2035 (USAID, 2014). In addition, with up to 60 percent of urban dwellers in Africa living in informal settlements (Habitat for Humanity, 2019), land tenure security in urban areas is increasingly challenging.
